HW 1.4 My Personal Course Objectives

In my teaching practice I've incorporated social media, internet culture and videos, and occasionally software like Photoshop and Illustrator and Final Cut. But I've struggled to incorporate digital media into curricula without it feeling like novelty, or arbitrarily included, unless the course is based in technology, as when I taught Video Essentials.

I'd like to be able to incorporate tech into teaching in a way that feels inherent and exciting, and not just drawing on iPads if a school happens to have them. I think part of the way to do this, for me, is to highlight the activist and social justice aspects of working with technology like video, photo, social media, and coding.

Artist and educator Mindi Rhoades has written an article about the activist potential for video making for LGBTQ youth: http://www.academia.edu/12336468/Rhoades_2012_Studies_LGBTQ_youth_video_artivism_article

HW 1.3 - Digital Art Gallery

http://319scholes.org/

319 Scholes, located in Brooklyn, was a contemporary art gallery devoted to exploring digital arts, digital media, and  arts experimentation. The gallery closed in 2013, but leaves behind documentation of its numerous shows over two years, within its website.

The exhibitions in this space showcased work that was really in touch with the current climate of art making and technology. The exhibitions frequently had some interactive component, and were usually wrestling ideologically with how we make work, make meaning, form identity, research,  and even socialize in the developing digital realm. They also hosted digital art auctions, IRL meetups of online image sharing forums, and had a robust social media presence.

HW 1.2 Hennesy Youngman - Social Media Based Performance Art

Hennesy Youngman is the alter ego/ongoing performative project of Philadelphia-based artist Jayson Musson. Hennesy the character makes videos about contemporary art topics in hip hop vernacular. The topics range from relational aesthetics, to the sublime, to race in the art world, to how artist Bruce Nauman has already created every work of art you will ever think to make. There is a critique of the art world, especially the art world within academia, embedded in these videos. Yet, the videos also present topics which are difficult to describe simply in a highly accessible way, loaded with a lot of humour. Technology is integral to this project, as the character exists primarily in his YouTube channel. The work has found a following, and started dialogue because of the social nature of this platform. The collection can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/user/HennesyYoungman

HW 1.1 - My Media, My Forms

Hi, I'm Vanessa. My art practice is rooted in concept, and spans across media, encompassing mixed media sculpture, drawing, photography, animation, interactive public art, and social media. I am drawn to multiple materials and the aesthetic and cultural significance they can convey. My work currently engages with feminism, pop culture, dark humour, analytic philosophy and the philosophy of language, obfuscation, obsolescence, military code, and failure.

My materials are usually a combination of more rudimentary media and technology - like stop motion animation using coloured pencil drawings or paper cut, and then animated in Flash or Final Cut; an interactive live photo booth; or scanning post-it notes. I have also worked extensively with metal and wood shop technology - I have an affinity for power tools. I favour a labourious process. I like to obsess over details for long periods of time, and to really immerse myself in my process when making art. I believe strongly in the handmade, the use of craft, and the ability to see the artist’s hand in the work.

I have a BA in Viseual Art and French Literature; my two theses were a written dissertation on activism in French Literature, and a coloured pencil classical animation. I have an MFA in visual art and my thesis was a written dissertation on my artwork, its context, and the philosophy of language, and a body of artwork including fake forms of communication and a 20' airplane.
