HW 1.2 Hennesy Youngman - Social Media Based Performance Art

Hennesy Youngman is the alter ego/ongoing performative project of Philadelphia-based artist Jayson Musson. Hennesy the character makes videos about contemporary art topics in hip hop vernacular. The topics range from relational aesthetics, to the sublime, to race in the art world, to how artist Bruce Nauman has already created every work of art you will ever think to make. There is a critique of the art world, especially the art world within academia, embedded in these videos. Yet, the videos also present topics which are difficult to describe simply in a highly accessible way, loaded with a lot of humour. Technology is integral to this project, as the character exists primarily in his YouTube channel. The work has found a following, and started dialogue because of the social nature of this platform.
