HW 13.1 The Lamp

I attended Deren's Friday night workshop, and it was a lot of fun. In a team with two other people, we connected our Photon to our Breadboard, and used my iPad to connect to the wireless network associated with the Photon. We used my IFTTT account to set up a recipe to turn the LED light on depending on the weather conditions. When the wireless connection cut out, our team connected the photon to laptop via USB.

I really enjoyed learning about this other functionality for IFTTT. I have used this service before to connect Tumblr, and Twitter - only online programs and social media. I didn't actually know that it could be used to connect to a physical device. So turning the light on via IFTTT was really exciting and new!

My favourite part of this lamp, which I still have, is the RGB LED. Turning the cardboard circle to connect the circuit in different spots and produce different colours is really wonderful, and feels like colour mixing with light. 

 

       

       

HW 11.1 3D ME

At the NAEA conference in Chicago I was 3D scanned using an Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor. There's a free program called ReconstructMe or another free program called Saknect to scan using the Kinect through a computer. I put the file into Tinkercad, and then that file into the MakerBot software in the Myers Media Lab. I printed a tiny version of myself, which was pretty thrilling. It's as close to becoming an action figure as I have ever been. Also, I decided not to removed the 3D printed "raft" because I sort of thought it looked charming as a base for this piece. HW 10.1 Laser Cut Yeti

I was really excited about using the laser cutter in our last class. This is a piece of technology that I have not used, but the potential of which I've thought about a lot before. The clean die-cut or neatly etched surfaces that are possible with this machine and an illustrator file are unendingly appealing. I was lucky enough to pair with someone who had experience with the laser cutter (shout out to Teny!) and I remembered a bit of illustrator having not used it in some years. So this was a very comfortable exercise with a low barrier for entry. I am really excited to use this machine more. I like the idea of using laser cut objects for mixed media work, animation, and for really cool business cards too. And yetis, always more yetis.
